Log 3: High Caliber Fantasy

Around the end of Summer, Project Artemis was started. I’m hoping that the end result of it will be an interesting project. Learned a good amount of things getting things set up””we are only two people working at it. The biggest stopper in continuing working on nothing but it””is the monetary factor””we are need of paying jobs””or funding, and needing someone who can support the art side of things. Ideally the former would solve the later.
What is Project Artemis?
In “Operation: Longbow,” you’re a sniper deployed to various realms, tasked with defending villages, castles and protecting assets from threats. Utilize modern-day weaponry and protect the realms assigned. Master precision shooting and strategic planning in a tense, immersive low-fantasy world.
Elevator Pitch: Sniper Immersive Sim in a Low Fantasy Setting but you’re not using a crossbow or a bow.
It’s Operation: Longbow.
The target audience for this was the easiest part to figure out. If you enjoy tactical-based shooters rather than the more arcadey ones””at least in it’s current iteration. If you enjoy RPGS and fantasy worlds””the game it’s supposed to be a good blend between the two.
The player will enter into the primary world which is the place they are protecting, this is when an assignment is being selected.
GURPS Fantasy defines the genre as “closer to realistic fiction than to myth. Low Fantasy stories focus on people’s daily lives and practical goals … A Low Fantasy campaign asks what it’s like to live in a world of monsters, magic, and demigods.”
I started thinking””what would be a good descriptor for it? TacticalPunk, FantasyTactical, OccultPunk, DimensionPunk, GatePunk, RealmPunk, Worldpunk? Technopunk? Hmm.
The hooks are:
-
Have you ever wanted to give an elf a glock? 1
-
So I brought a sniper to a sword fight.
The next thing to decide thematically””which also affects the mechanics is what do we NOT want to be in the game? So far we choose:
Things we absolutely don’t want in / not going to do (so it won’t be a thought or focus”“ this will help clear focus)
-
The player utilizes a bow, sword, shield and et cetera.
-
Too many extremely fancy, sci-fi tools the player can use.
-
No super neo-futuristic technology.
-
No in-depth interaction with NPCs.2
-
Likely will not be on ground level with any hostile NPC (as in base dirt level)
-
No procedural generation based Systems.
-
While it’s good, no GATE anime ref., or isekai refs. After all, the primer and basis for my love of this extremely niche genre was in: Stargate & Narnia more than anything else.
Then the Do’s. Just two.
- Let’s play it 100% straight in tone. * Satisfying eliminations of NPCs.
Currently, many of the parts of the pre-production has its first pass.
Two specific mission types””then the game modes. But I’ve also halted and have since then pivoted it slightly something else a little more and a little less ambitionous.
I’m currently doing an consulting gig, so most of my time is being devoted to that while I’m creating this. A version of project longbow can still exist but its something I’d rather hire for and build a team to create.
Great execution is the goal.
